Here's How to Do Earth Day the Flint Handmade Way!

The nation will wind down the week with a big celebration of all things green – Earth Day 2011.
To give a local spin on getting the most of Friday's push to promote environmentally-friendly actions, Crystal Pepperdine of Flint Handmade has three tips on how to have some green fun around town with the group.
1) “Reuse” by attending a Flint Handmade Craft Supply Swap. It happens from noon to 3 p.m. on the first Sunday of every February and August at The Lunch Studio, 444 S. Saginaw St., Flint. It's a chance to pass on the craft supplies you no longer use to someone else who really needs them and take home some free supplies for yourself.
2) “Upcycle” (like recycling, but transforming unused products into something of a higher value) by giving handmade goods as gifts. Pepperdine said those milk caps are desperate to become a cute pin cushions for your sewing friends and your collection of wine cords would make a great cork board for the wine connoisseur in your life. Visit www.flinthandmade.blogspot.com and search “craft tutorial” for other upcycled gift ideas.
3) “Support the local” by visiting city-based shops like Flint Handmade's display at The Lunch Studio. Pepperdine explains that it puts a huge strain on the environment and fossil fuel resources to ship products from across the national and world. Instead, support local crafters and be kind to Mother Nature. Plus, every dollar you spend at a locally-owned business has three times the economic impact of a dollar spent at an absentee chain retailer.
